CERTIFICATIONS & CLASSES

Become a certified lifeguard, water safety instructor & more

Want to become a Red Cross-certified lifeguard or instructor? Looking to become a new babysitter? We now offer several certifications and classes that teach skills and techniques for lifeguards, lifeguarding instructors, water safety instructors and babysitters.

First-Time Lifeguard Certification

Our lifeguard classes teaches preventative lifeguarding, in-water rescue techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED and basic first aid skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a two-year American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

Pre-Requisities

Students seeking their first lifeguard certification must be at least 15 years old by the last date of the course (proof of age required) and be able to complete:

  • a 300-yard continuous swim
  • two minutes of treading water
  • a 10-pound brick retrieval from a depth of seven-to-10 feet

Students must bring proof of age and proof of completion of the online portion of the class.

You must attend all three days of each certification class, complete the online portion and provide proof of online completion to become certified.

Upcoming Dates

First-time certification requires attendance at three-day sessions, running Fridays through Sundays:

  • September 28-30
  • November 2-4
  • December 7-9

Class hours are as follows. Attendance is required on all three days.

  • 5:00-9:00 p.m. Friday
  • 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

 

Cost

$255*/three-day course

If you cancel six days or more before your first session, you will receive a 90 percent refund of fees paid to DU.

Registration

To register for lifeguard certification:

  1. Register with DU at least two weeks before the start of in-person classes.
  2. When you receive your emailed receipt, follow the link to the American Red Cross online learning portion.
    • The online portion consists of nine lessons and a test, all of which must be completed before you arrive at the first session of the in-person class. You must pass the online test with a score of at least 80 percent.
    • It will take you approximately seven to 10 hours to complete the online portion.
    • Print or take a picture of your certification of completion, and bring it to the first session of the in-person class.

Lifeguard Recertification

Students seeking recertification must hold a current American Red Cross lifeguard certificate or an expired certificate by no more than 30 days. Proof of current or previous certification must be provided, along with proof of completion of the online portion of the class.

Upcoming Dates

Recertification requires attendance at one-day sessions from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.:

  • October 7
  • November 10
  • December 16

Cost

$185/one-day course

Lifeguard Instructor

Become a certified lifeguard instructor with these courses. Participants will be trained to teach the following courses: Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, and Administering Emergency Oxygen and Blood-borne Pathogens Training.

Participants will also become familiar with courses in Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

Prerequisites

Participants must:

  • be at least 17 years old on or before the last date of the course
  • hold a current Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or an equivalent certification from another organization)

Class hours are as follows. Attendance is required on all three days.

  • 5:00-9:00 p.m. Friday
  • 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Cost: $385/three-day course ($350 to DU, $35 to the Red Cross)

Water Safety Instructor

Become trained in how to teach American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety courses and presentations. You will develop understanding of the Red Cross course materials, learn how to conduct training sessions and learn how to evaluate participants’ progress.

Prerequisites

Participants must:

  • be at least 16 years old on or before the last date of the course
  • swim proficiently in six strokes
  • float on your back for one minute
  • tread water for one minute

These skills will be assessed on the first day of class.

  • 4:00-9:00 p.m. Friday
  • 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Babysitting Courses

Open to youth participants ages 11-15, these classes will provide future babysitters with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants.

Participants will learn basic child care and first aid, how to keep themselves and others safe, how to help children behave, how to develop a babysitting business, and develop leadership skills

Babysitting courses require attendance at one-day sessions from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
