Lacrosse (W) - Team Picture FY16Club Sports brings together groups of students with similar interests to organize and participate in a specific sporting activity. It is a dynamic organization on the DU campus, committed to developing students as active members of the university community. With 30 active club sports teams that compete in local, regional, and national competitions each year, students have the opportunity to engage in teamwork and leadership development through active lifestyles.

Club Sports saw its first team national championship, won by Club Women’s Lacrosse in 2016 in an overtime victory in the WCLA Division II National Championship game held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The team’s first goal was to qualify for Nationals – but the next one was to put itself in a position to get there. Each February, the team takes a full squad to California for the Santa Barbara Shootout to play against many of the best teams in the west. This tournament serves as not only a great start to their competition season by getting everyone opportunities to see the field but also provides the opportunity for the team to climb up in the rankings to help with qualification to Nationals. After 2016’s 5-0 showing in Santa Barbara, the team claimed its first No. 1 ranking in the polls and never looked back.

Throughout a typical season, each member is responsible for team dues on top of her flights to Santa Barbara and post-season events outside of driving range. While those team dues help with the cost of officials ($300-$400/game), transportation, lodging, equipment, team apparel and tournament entry fees, players rely on university funding, fundraising efforts, and support through donations to be able to continue competing at the highest level. Without generous donations, the team would have never been able to afford the expenses associated with winning a national championship!

With more than 1,000 students participating in Club Sports each year, your continued contributions allow students the opportunity to participate and reach their goals. Learn more online about each of our Club Sports teams.
